More than 50 new trainees at Trimet

This year, Trimet Aluminium SE will be engaging up to 55 new trainees at its production sites in Germany. The medium-sized company offers young applicants long-term career prospects in eleven technical and business professions. Presently there are still a few apprenticeship training positions haven’t yet been filled.

Frankfurt exhibition hall modernised with painted aluminium

The Frankfurt exhibition hall was modernised with the Novelis FF2 painted aluminium. The siding was installed within six months during ongoing operations. Novelis’ FF2 coloured aluminium is especially suited because of its weather-resistant, high-quality PVdF coating.

AEROBAL launches online magazine

AEROBAL, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers, has launched the first issue of its free-of-charge online CANS magazine in June 2015. Twice a year AEROBAL will report about the latest trends, innovations and creative ideas around aluminium aerosols.

Utilising solar energy to melt aluminium

South Africa has abundance of solar energy and, at the same time, a large aluminium processing industry. In a project called SOLAM (solar melting of aluminium in a directly radiated rotary kiln) scientists and businesses are developing a method in which aluminium foundries can utilise solar energy to melt the metal.

Better aluminium welding with fast laser mirrors

Silicon micromirrors are capable of guiding laser beams extremely quickly, making it possible to perfectly dose the heat applied to workpieces. ow a Fraunhofer team has succeeded in developing fast and durable mirrors, which are ready for demanding cutting and welding tasks, particularly for aluminium.

New method for laser beam welding of die cast aluminium

Fraunhofer IWS Dresden has developed a new method for welding parts made of die cast aluminium and has begun mass production together with an industry partner. With the help of a brilliant laser beam and high-frequency beam oscillation, for the first time it was possible to generate a welded joint with extremely low pore frequency in the weld material.

HAI invests nine million Euros in modernization of extrusion press plant

Hammerer Aluminium Industries GmbH (HAI), headquartered in Upper Austrian Ranshofen, has completed the implementation of a nine million euro modernization package. The modernized and the new aluminium press raise the productivity of the main plant in Ranshofen.

Jürgen Hirsch takes over DGM chairmanship

At the DGM board meeting at the end of April in Frankfurt Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Hirsch from the Hydro aluminium company was unanimously elected as president for the years 2015 and 2016. With that Prof. Hirsch will succeed Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Christ.

International Al Pressure Die Casting Competition 2016

GDA is holding for the second time the international Aluminium Pressure Die Casting Competition 2016. Partner in the implementation of the competition is the BDG. The competition is supported by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) and the Swiss Aluminium Association (alu.ch).

Harald Kroener is new president of WVM

The chairman of Wieland-Werke in Ulm, Harald Kroener, is the new president of the WirtschaftsVereinigung Metalle (WVM). Kroener follows Oliver Bell, who had stepped down from his office at the end of March. The reason behind was a professional change to a company outside of the non-ferrous-metal industry.

The new Audi Q7 – Considerably lighter thanks to aluminium

Compared to its predecessor, depending on the type of engine the new Audi Q7 has shed up to 325 kilograms. The body alone, with its innovative multi-material construction integrating large components made of aluminium, saves 71 kilograms.

Hydro lays the cornerstone for new recycling plant

At its Rheinwerk plant in Neuss, Hydro has laid the cornerstone of a new recycling plant for used beverage cans. The new plant is going to double the existing annual recycling capacity to around 100,000 tonnes and will process a wide variety of can scrap.

Researchers at Stanford University have developed an aluminium-ion rechargeable battery that charges in minutes. It also offers a very long durability. Another advantage is that aluminium batteries are relatively cheap, and compared to alkaline batteries, environmentally friendly.
