At the DGM board meeting at the end of April in Frankfurt Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Hirsch from the Hydro aluminium company was unanimously elected as president for the years 2015 and 2016. On 16 September 2015 on DGM day in the framework of “materials week” the election by the meeting of the members is to take place. With that Hirsch will succeed Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Christ.
The “DGM Pioneer” looks back on a long history in the DGM: “The DGM facilitated my entry into networks, and helped me decisively in my professional and scientific development,” said Hirsch. Initially joining as student, he has been a member of the DGM already for 40 years now and has been involved in various committees. For example he was active in the advisor group and in various special and program committees, and established the special aluminium committee in 2013. From 2012 to 2014 he was active in the executive board as deputy speaker of the special DGM committees. Jürgen Hirsch is a recipient of the 2007 DGM Tammann award and was honoured in 2014 with the “DGM Pioneer” – the award was presented for the first time in the history of DGM.
The German association of material science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM)) is the largest and most renowned technical and scientific professional association in the field of material science and material engineering in Europe. To ensure that this remains so, Hirsch has plans in mind for the future. Linking scientific research into basic principles with actual technical application by using it in industrial processes and product developments is one of his central aims.
